House Groups comprise members of Parish congregations who meet in each other’s houses to study the Bible and other books, to discuss issues raised, pray, enjoy fellowship and refreshments. The sessions are led by members of the group.

There are currently four house groups meeting in the Parish of Abingdon-on-Thames. Meetings are usually fortnightly and in the informal setting of the host’s home. The Desiring Life group meets on Tuesday afternoons in the Parish Centre Lounge.

Each group has its own particular characteristics. Some will choose to study a book of the Old or New Testament throughout the year, taking into account writings of a number of modern theologians. Others focus on scheduled readings for an upcoming Sunday service or on a Christian focused book.

It is possible to ‘try out’ a house group before ‘joining’ to see whether it meets your needs. New members are always welcome. If you would like to join a group or form a new group, please talk to the administrator in the office who will be able to put you in touch with others.

• Monday afternoons (alternate)
We often study a recommended book. For more information contact Jane Morgan.

• Monday evenings (alternate)
This group was originally formed as one of the St Nicolas’ House Groups though now it also has members from St Helen’s. The group studies Old and New Testament books in depth and usually finishes with Compline. For more information contact Roderick Smith.

Desiring Life Group (occasional)
Led by clergy and lay people this group meets on alternate Tuesday afternoons, 2-4pm, to discuss a particular recommended book for that season. Dates and the books to be looked at are posted on the St Helen’s website and on leaflets in the church. For more information please contact Susan Scott.

• Tuesday evenings (alternate)
As well as studying the lectionary readings or a book we often use a commentary to study and discuss a particular book of the Bible. We also include a time of prayer. For more information contact Silvia Joinson or Elizabeth Dawson.

• Friday evenings (alternate)
We look at the readings for Sunday services or study a recommended book. For more information contact Jill Gant or Margaret Horton.
